RIP Eric Medalle

The Pokemon Company International Creative Design Director Eric Medalle died on Sunday during a windstorm in Seattle while taking his youngest daughter for a drive. Their car was crushed by a tree. His daughter, who’s 2, has sustained only minor injuries, thank god. He also has another daughter, aged 6.

Medalle was credited with several games in the Pokemon series according to Bulbapedia:

– Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire: English & European Graphic Design
– Pokemon X and Y: English & European Graphic Design
– Pokemon Black and White Versions 2: English Version Artwork
– Pokemon Conquest: Graphic Design
– Pokemon Black and White Versions: English Version Artwork
– Pokemon Ranger: Guardian Signs: English-Version Graphic Design
– Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver Versions: English-Version Artwork
– Pokemon Ranger: Shadows of Almia: English Version Artwork

A friend of his wife’s (they work at the same school) has created a YouCaring page to raise funds for the family.

RIP Eric Medalle.

Good night, Alan Rickman

Alan Rickman has died at the age of 69 from cancer.

I wanted to write a little something to remember him by for myself, as well as include some bits of his talent just in case anyone’s forgotten about how amazing this man was because I am just incredibly sad and I don’t really know what else to do.

As a child of the Harry Potter era, reading and watching it fervently, going through as many ups and downs as the characters and the actors that I could know about, the most important of Alan Rickman’s roles to me was Professor Snape. He made Snape accessible, funny, steely but gentle, and his motivations complex and understandable to the point where even JK Rowling changed her perception of the character after watching Rickman’s interpretation. Fanfic after fanfic about the softer side of Snape, and the possible misunderstood an maligned nature of the Slytherin house in general, came out full force after his portrayal because of his portrayal.

We all fell in love. I know I did.

He is missed by that cast and Rowling herself.

Good night Mr. Rickman. You will be sorely missed.

Thankfully, progress has been made in the form of Taiwan granting workplace protection for LGBTs, and Taiwan in general has been leagues above other Asian countries in terms of LGBT rights. For most of Asia, homosexuality is still an underground movement, and perhaps shares a rather continent-wide “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” culture.

Taiwan is currently considering a marriage legalization bill, but it’s getting attacked from the Christian segments of the country, which is probably why the production company felt this video was necessary.

As the song goes: “各有各一生一世 各有各的溫柔鄉 / 神不神聖 愛這種信仰 誰說了算” (Everyone has their own life to live. And they all have someone to love. / Gods, religions and such, “love”, this kind of belief, who has the right to make rules on it.)

Sir Terry Pratchett

I’m trying not to cry in the middle of my law class and my brain immediately shouts:

“But I haven’t finished all of your books!”

“I haven’t met you yet!”

“You were working on books despite your Alzheimer’s, you were, I heard! Were they finished? Did you finish your legacy?”

and “Please don’t go.”

Sir Terry Pratchett, you were one of my favorite authors, one of the smartest authors I’ve ever read, and one with such heart besides. Death is glad to walk with you now, while the rest of us mourn.

Ineke A-H: Field Notes From Paris

Piano as an accompaniment to string today! I think I first heard this song when I was 16, though I don’t quite remember why. I try not to question discoveries of beauty.

Field Notes From Paris

Wet: lavender, coriander, citrus, leather, wood
Dry: coriander, lavender, tobacco flower, patchouli, cedar, tonka bean, lime, maybe a little rosemary

This is my new sexy scent, directly in competition with all of the jasmine I adore. It’s incredibly delightful: deep, dark, and warm, as well as complex. It moves in a swirl like a gust of warm wind, something absolutely welcome in this frigid cold. Strangely, it’s the herbs, the coriander and the bit of rosemary I get that reminds me most of the coffee implied in the description, though the tobacco comes through and keeps the fragrance warm. I love that its sweetness is wholly tempered, and it gives it depth and dimension that I don’t normally come across. It reminds me of bedroom eyes on an attractive person, or simply a person you’re in love with, as love automatically makes them beautiful.

I wear this personally, and I think this is a scent that benefits from a little dancing and sweat, but it’s a beautiful scent and I can see it on a guy who isn’t afraid to wear purple, and is trained in some art or another, which he pursues with passion.

Sometimes

Some days I need to remind myself not to give in to my emotions.

Today I won’t be angry. Today I won’t snap. Today I won’t cry. Today I won’t shirk. Today I will be productive and not let anxiety destroy my work ethic or my relationships. Today I will let bygones be bygones, and eventually bygones will actually be bygones and I’ll have let them go with practice.

Usually, if I’m emotionally drained, this is all easier, weirdly enough. And I’m a little drained, not going to lie. I haven’t really been given a rest yet.

Or if I can pour a little of it out, I can deal with all of it easier. It doesn’t threaten to tip over.

To accomplish that, I’m going to make a list of things I get to do if I do what I need to do.

I can:

  • Find an interesting article and write about it
  • Write a poem
  • Work on a composition
  • Play videogames
  • Catch up on Youtube videos
  • Play The Sims/maybe download Sims 4
  • Go to the library and check out books
  • Fiddle with my phone

if I first:

  • Finish my schoolwork
    • Consumer Behavior, then Marketing Consulting, then International Business, then Politics and Literature
  • Finish polishing my resume and apply to the places I wanted to apply to
  • E-mail a company about a misunderstanding

Okay. I can do this.
