Academic freedom

My law professor is so bad at enforcing academic freedom. As defined by Stanley Fish during that seminar that I attended for him and a bunch of presidents/deans, and presumably in his book that I never bought (though I’m tempted to), academic freedom is the ability for academia to traverse all routes of truth with their students with the condition of refraining from affecting where those students go with their thoughts. And seriously, we can’t get through a class without him stating his views under guise of showing us where he’s coming from. It’s just unnecessary all of the time, and this is coming from someone who agrees with him.

Then again, we are studying law which is inherently political, unlike English, which is and was Professor Fish’s realm. My professor seems to think confirming his views over and over is necessary for some reason. It skirts dangerously close to making the classroom a sound board though, and I think all of the men sitting in that seminar would agree. They have, and would, all take a more way conservative take on teaching, even if it seems like the majority of them identify as perhaps middle-left, or middle-right. They would be authoritarian and respectable where my vegan, leftist professor is very conversational, even a little bumbling in a charming way. (He literally just said he was vegan.) I can’t imagine him being okay with the constraints Fish sets for academic tutors and for their pursuit of academia. It’s hilarious thinking about Mr. Fish trying to convince him that his teaching methods aren’t respectable, but I guess that’s why he teachers at my school and not at NYU or Yeshiva.

School’s getting closer, so I decided to retrain myself for it by going to bed ridiculously late and waking up ridiculously early for a lecture! Yay! I found it on Eventbrite while browsing and took a chance.

And I’m really glad I did. It was a really interesting seminar, a little on the short side, full of little tips I would have never thought of, like how important emotional touchstones, big and small (“anything from a big brand experience to a tweet”), are to a customer base. There are tons of examples of these connections with consumers that I can think of. Some smaller gestures include Xbox’s (T, F) and T-Mobile’s (T, F) avid usage of their twitter handles and Facebook support apps to annual events like Krispy Kreme’s Day of the Dozens, Talk Like a Pirate, and National Doughnut Days. Everyone remembers larger political gestures like Oreo’s support for gay pride, to well-established, company-wide policies like Starbucks’ C.A.F.E Practices (they work with Conservation International to keep the farming sustainable) and TOMS Shoes policy of donating a pair of shoes for every pair purchased. All of them work to improve the perception of the brand and endear its consumers to it, while actually decreasing a little of the bad in the world at the same time. And of course, little gestures like that are key for small business owners to create their own communities; Milk Sugar Love’s content on their Facebook page regularly attempts to engage users with questions and relatable expressions.

Nick Diamond making jingles and social awareness through advertising

Went to the Saatchi & Saatchi ‘7×7’ Seminar at BB King after my volunteering shift! It was fantastic, although I wish everyone had more time to speak. That was the point though; seven people, with seven minutes each.

I also caught the end of the previous seminar, which was about social awareness through advertising with the creators in charge of the Truth campaign and Evolve’s gun safety campaign:

As well as Budweiser’s love affair with puppies continuing to make people ‘aw’ and cry and this time, warn people against drinking and driving.

We narrowly missed an off-topic and harrowing discussion about gun rights (and how no one should have guns, my god, why are you even encouraging this) and it seemed that everyone working on these particular projects were passionate and truly put thought into targeting my generation. Especially though, they were aware of slacktivism and made sure to supplement the awareness with activities; creating cab and towing programs to keep drunken people off the road, getting gun owners to sign a code of gun safety and trying to bridge the gap between gun owners and non-gun owners by engaging through social media, and acknowledging that as a culture we’ve come a long way for smoking, and that all there’s left is to burn it out.
