Carlos McKnight of Washington waves a flag in support of same-sex marriage outside the U.S. Supreme Court on Friday, June 26. The Supreme Court ruled 5-4 Friday that states cannot ban same-sex marriage, handing gay rights advocates their biggest victory yet. It was a 5-4 ruling and it seem to have only passed because of the current liberal majority in the Supreme Court, so it was a hard-earned ruling, but it passed. Scalia’s notes about the discussion worry me juuust a little, and mainly because I still think the court system, with all its flaws represents something awesome and interesting and great within this country:

“The substance of today’s decree is not of immense personal importance to me, but what really astounds is the hubris reflected in today’s judicial Putsch.”

Which makes me believe that it got a little close and personal in the courthouse, which it shouldn’t have, but nonetheless, it was like a breath of fresh air to hear about it this morning.

“Hope unbelieved is always considered nonsense. But hope believed is history in the process of being changed.” – Jim Wallis, Christian left writer and preacher.

I remember specifically calling the O’Malley offices back in 2011 on shifts to pass single-sex marriage in Maryland, and when it did two years later. This isn’t the end though, and it never really is; according the article, about 2/3rds of Americans are in favor of gay marriage. That’s a whole third of the country who is going to be irrationally upset about all of this and I hope the backlash doesn’t take a turn for the tragic.

And if Mr. Huckabee truly wants to talk about “tyranny”, and specifically “judicial tyranny” I’m up for a debate on democracy, human rights, and power.
